Horchata is a creamy Mexican Rice Drink which is very refreshing and delicious. There are many different ways to prepare horchata depending on the region in Mexico you are from. In Jalisco the horchata is based on rice and has a sweet creamy flavor and texture.

It’s best enjoyed with some ice and additional cinnamon powder sprinkled on the top of the glass for decoration and flavour.

Flavored waters are very common in Mexico. We can buy them from street vendors, Paleterías (ice cream shops), in restaurants, school cafeterias and of course we can find them in each Mexican home. In businesses they are often displayed in big glass barrels which will fill the room with beautiful colors.

History

Horchata, which comes from the Latin term hordeata, which in turn comes from hordeum (barley), is a term related to a Mediterranean tradition of grain-based beverages. With the muslim conquest it spread to Valencia in Spain.

From Valencia, where it remained popular, the concept of horchata was brought to the New World. Here, drinks called agua de horchata or simply horchata came to be made with white rice and cinnamon or cinnamon.

Today, these and other similarly-flavoured plant milk beverages are sold in various parts of the world as varieties of horchata. Horchata, the creamy Mexican Rice Drink version is very common in the state of Jalisco, Mexico.
