Mexican-Style Shrimp Cocktail
In our family we love preparing and eating this Mexican-Style Shrimp Cocktail. It is one of several dishes which brings memories of Mexico to our mind, especially of life in Tepatitlan, Jalisco, where Alexandra is from.
Whenever we are in Tepatitlan Alexander spends most of his mornings at “La marisqueria Venegas” as he enjoys eating a big shrimp cocktail and some ceviche. The restaurant is run by one of Alexandra`s cousins but as much as we love supporting family this is not the main reason why Alexander loves going there. Fernando, the owner of the restaurant, is an amazing cook and constantly comes up with new creations. One can feel that his team loves working with him at the restaurant and we have only heard praise and admiration from his customers. His menu has an immense variety of ceviches and on each trip we discover new flavour creations of his! For example ceviche with a jamaica-chili sauce or mango ceviche. The home-made ketchup and the home-made hot sauce of course are also amazing, but beware, the spiciness of the sauce will give you a kick!
With our Mexican-Style Shrimp Cocktail, we tried to recreate how Fernando makes his shrimp cocktail, however with ingredients which are available all over the world and with easy steps.
If you talk about shrimp cocktail with Europeans, they will think of shrimp cocktails with a mayonnaise based sauce. It’s a very heavy type of shrimp cocktail and not comparable with the amazing taste of the Mexican shrimp cocktail.
Shrimp is high in several vitamins and minerals, and is a rich source of protein. By adding lemon juice it also contains a high degree of vitamin C. Therefore, this makes it a perfect breakfast and best fuel for a good start of the day. That must also be the reason why it’s a typical breakfast dish in Mexico.
We hope you enjoy our interpretation of the recipe and love it as much as we do!
