Café de Olla

Café de Olla is a fragrant coffee very typical in Mexico. Ordinary black coffee is transformed into an explosion of flavors thanks to the spices added to it! This very special coffee is guaranteed to fill yours homes and hearts, and transport you to beautiful Mexico. The land of fantastic food, beverages, and spices. Did you know that Mexican food is recognized by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage??!! If there is one thing that makes a Mexican very proud is our food!

Café de olla is a drink steeped in Mexican history. During the early days of the Mexican Revolution in 1910,  adelitas, supported soldiers by cooking, cleaning and setting up camp. They prepared café de olla with cinnamon, piloncillo, cloves, coffee and chocolate roasted in a clay pot, to serve as a filling drink that would help maintain the soldiers’ energy throughout the hard day.

We love preparing Cafe de olla on weekends, and like this we start the day with the flavours of Mexico. If you managed to prepare some Conchas or cinnamon cake on friday night, it can’t get any better than that. Café de Olla is a perfect combination with Conchas or other Mexican sweet breads.

If you prepare this coffee with a Mexican earthen clay pot it gives the coffee an even more special taste. As many people don’t own clay pots you can also use a normal pan or enamel pan, as we did in our video. Now we happily also own some clay pots and use them to make this fragrant coffee.

Any day you make this coffee your kitchen will be filled with the amazing aromas of cinnamon, orange and piloncillo combined with coffee.

In Mexico this coffee is common in most homes and restaurants and also prepared often in Christmas season.
